Children

In the probate of William Whittredge, his son Thomas is named executor. The records as presented in Essex County (Mass) Probate Records (2:143-145) make no reference to any other son but Thomas. The published records lack the final disposition, however, the estate was insolvent and there would have been little (if anything) to distribute to William's heirs.

In the probate record of Thomas Whittridge of Ipswich, among those named present when he gave his verbal will, was "his brother Sammuell Whittridge." (2:286-288). Hoyt in Old Families (p. 357) provides William with three sons (Thomas, Samuel, and William).

In a 2010 article, David A. Whittredge provides a wider view of the family of William, adding 3 children born in England and another 5 born in Ipswich. The sources for identifying the additional individuals as being children of William are not new and it seems, Whittredge is forcing into one family those of the name despite the lack of evidence of a known relationship with William. All of those named, who resided in the Colony of Massachusetts are known individuals. Absent from this article is a discussion of the rationale used to identify these individuals as children of this William, where previous attempts had failed to come to the same definitive conclusions. By extension, the English origin data warrants peer review. Therefore, care ought to be exercised before using this article as a source in creating additional relationships to this William.
