From a book by Carl Baldwin: I wanted to explore the old Whiteside Cemetary lying atop a high knoll overlooking the Whiteside School on Lebanon Avenue just northeast of Belleville (IL). It was a surprise to me when he said he would be glad to see me at his home...the Whiteside house. "It is directly across Lebanon Avenue from the Whiteside School," he said .....The history of the house is long and fascinating. William Lot, son of John and grandson of the first William, married Nancy Pulliam in 1797. Shortly after 1800 he took her to the beautiful wooded estate which henceforth would be known as the Whiteside Plantation...Reis and I walked across Lebanon Avenue and climbed the steep hill to the Whiteside Cemetary, one of the several established by the family in St. Clair, Madison and Monroe counties... many headstones were worn by weather, many broken and far too many missing. We could make out Joseph O. Whiteside (1814-1859), Isaac Jefferson Phillips, etc..
