William White, a miller and farmer, was a resident of Criech, Sorbie Parish, Wigtonshire, Scotland, who farmed lands leased from Lord Galloway and built and operated mills there. His father, grandfather and great-grandfather had all been millers and farmers in Sorbie Parish.
In addition to his children with Margaret McGowan, William White was the father of Robert Whyte, who was a member of the Court of Errors and Appeals of the State of Tennessee, United States. The identity of Robert's mother is unknown. Two letters from William to Robert, discussing family matters and describing his farming and mill construction/operation activities can be found in the Robert Whyte Papers, Tennessee State Archives, Nashville, Tennessee.

The White Monument was erected by William White and is identified as No. 22 on the Chapple/Birchman map of the cemetery.

Erected by William White, farmer and Miller in *Creech* in memory of his great grandfather William White, also farmer and miller there who died about the year 1680; of his grandfather Andrew White, farmer and miller in *Creech* who died about the year 1743; of his grandmother Margaret Maxwell; of his father Charles White, also farmer and miller in *Creech* who died in 1779 aged 73 years; And his mother Grace Dunbar who died in 1780 aged 64 years; and his Uncle William White, of his brothers James, Dunbar, and Charles, his sisters Margaret, Agnes and Grace. Also his brother Andrew who died in London and his sisters Jane and Mary who died in Minnigaff. **** William White the erector of this stone died at *Creech* on 31st December 1837 aged 93 to 95 years. Margaret McGowan his spouse died at *Creech* on the 3rd September 1865 aged 85 years. Their daughter Agnes died at *Creech* on the 4th April 1833 aged 26 years. Their son James died in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, U.S.N. America on the 16th August 1839 aged 30 years. Their son Charles who died at Greenwood, Louisiana, U.S.N. America on the 16th December 1842 aged 42 years. Their son William died at *Creech* on the 12th May 1851 aged 28 years. Their daughter Grace died at *Corwar* on the 15th Sepr 1884 aged 82 years. Their daughter Mary died at *Creech* on the 27th March 1892 aged 80 years. Their son Alexander died at *Creech* on the 30th March 1892 aged 77 years. Their son Andrew died at *Creech* on the 9th June 1898 aged 79 years.
