Glasgow (matric 1842) and Edinburgh. Advocate at Scottish Bar, 8mar1851; solicitor general 1874-76. LL.D. Edinburgh and Glasgow. MP (Cons.) for Glasgow and Aberdeen Universities 1876-80. 1880 app Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, cr Baron for life by the style of Baron Watson of Thankerton, Lanarks. He marr 6aug 1868 Margaret, yst dau of Dugald John Bannatyne. She died 3mar1898 at 20 Queens Gate, S.W. London. He died 14sep1899 at Sunlaws Hse., Kelso, aged 72. See Times obit. Resid.
