William R. Walston said consistently that he was born in Ohio and reported to the 1880 census that his parents were both from Maryland. He and almost all of the children of Josiah Walston and Margaret 'Peggy' Ford went west eventually to Pike County, Illinois. Whether he was also one of Josiah and Peggy's children is not established fact, but seems likely.

Josiah and Peggy were both from Somerset County, Maryland, where Josiah was born to 'Obed' Walston, the son of William Wallstone. Obed and his wife Molly and children William, Josiah, James P., Sophia, Leven and Ann Marie and their families all traveled to Fleming County, Kentucky. Obed, his sons William and Josiah and a man named Charles Walston, possibly Obed's brother Charles, were all in the 1810 census of Fleming County. About 1815, Obed and his large extended family moved to Pickaway County, Ohio. His son Leven settled in Ross County, Ohio. The rest of the Walston family located in Deer Creek township, Pickaway County, just north of Ross County.

'Peggy', Margaret Ford Walston is buried in Burbridge cemetery, Martinsburg township, Pike, Illinois. She died in 1867. Her husband Josiah died in 1857 in Pickaway County, Ohio, and is thought to have been buried in the "Old Walston Farm cemetery".
