William (a.k.a. Bill or Big Bill to distinguish him from his son) was a lawyer, attending University of Florida under the G.I. bill. Around 1950 he was active in politics, becoming the manager of his former law professor's (Bennett) successful campaign for U. S. House of Representatives. Bill was a congressional aide to Congressman Bennett for a while. He also managed the Florida gubernatorial campaign for Collins.
Around 1957, he went into private practice in Jacksonville, Florida with Al Schneider, forming that city's first Jewish-Anglo law practice.

"His principal duties were handling of court martial and similar legal proceedings. He won first-prize in the Base Essay contest on the subject 'Problems Faced by Allied Civil Administration in Sicily and How They Are Being Met.' His prize was a $50 War Bond. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve as Y3c at Jacksonville in June, 1942, and was assigned to recruiting duty there prior to his request for sea duty. He is married and before enlisting he completed two years of specialized law training. Although the board of five judges made no statement about the relative merits of the various entries, it is evident that the extended scope of Walker's essay, embracing almost all the important phases of the subject, gave him the decision. His superior handling of words, particularly better phraseology, probably also was a contributing factor."
