William Clayton Steffy
BIRTH 1816
Tennessee, USA
DEATH unknown
VA given as birth place in some censues. Living Mt.Tabor, Monroe Co., IN 1839. Probably the W C Steffy in Captain James H Callahan's Gonzales Militia, for the Republic of TX 1841. Md, (Dec.20,1842 Henderson Co., IL), Lorahamah Landers, (b.1822/24 Canada). [It's possible he joined the Mormans for at least awhile and is identical with a William C Steffey, ordained an elder at Nauvoo, IL 1843, to be sent as a missionary to Texas.] Resident of Gonzales, Republic of TX 1843. Also of TX 1846, but back at Mt.Tabor, Monroe Co., IN for 1850 census. Acquired land in Gonzales District of Caldwell Co., TX and appears on tax rolls there until sometime after 1856. Apparently went back to be near his parents, in Knox Co., IN around 1860, missing the 1860 census in both Texas and Indiana. He was of Iola, Allen Co., KS by 1867. [His occupation in 1850 & 1870 is listed as cabinet maker] Died after 1870, in KS or possibly Erath Co., TX, where two of his daughters were married in 1872 and most of his children were living by 1880. [One son had settled there by 1869, so it's possible his siblings moved to TX to join him after both parents died ca.1871.] The 1872 tax list for Erath Co., TX, in addition to the son J R, also shows what looks like a U G Steffy, which might be W C Steffy. The location of William Clayton Steffey's burial remains unknown.
