William was a confederate soldier in the civil war. Because of this he was given the nickname Dixy-Bill William was enlisted as a private in the 22nd Regiment of the Virginia Cavalry in Scott County, Virginia on the 4th of August 1862, for a 3 year term. He was transferred to Company A of the 4th Virginia Infantry on the 4th of October 1864. His name appears on one of the lists of Regulators (a vigilante group centered in Elliott County) who were pardoned by Gov. Luke P. Blackburn in 1882 and 1883. His tombstone gives his birthdate as 5-17-1820. William "Dixie Bill" Stapleton was born 17 May 1820 in VA, and died 6 June 1910 in Elliott Co, KY. He was a son of Thomas Stapleton and Elizabeth Salyers. He was married in Virginia to Easter (or Esther?) Salyers, who was born 17 Nov 1820, and died 6 Feb 1910 in Elliott Co., KY. She was a daughter of Jeremiah Salyers, Jr. and Mary Ann Green. Jeremiah Salyers, Jr. and Elizabeth Salyers were brother and sister, making William and Easter first cousins. William "Dixie Bill" Stapleton was a private in Co. A 22nd VA Cavalry, Confederate in the Civil War. While in the Army he met at man from the Greasy Ridge section of Elliott County. The man described the Greasy Ridge area. William was so impressed that he sent his family on to KY. When he was discharged from the Army, he joined his family in KY, settling first on Hurricane Creek then moving to Greasy Ridge. William and Easter had 14 children all born in VA. |
