REFN: 22 3. William Stamps lived in St. Mary's White Chapel Parish, Lancaster Co., VA. Family tradition has it that he married Mary Byrd, daughter of C ol. William Byrd and Mary Horsemandin, about 1700..... No mention is made of this marriage in the various Byrd records; while some indicate that Mary nev er married, another says that she married a John Rogers. Info in Lancaster Co ., VA Order Book, 1720, p. 193 needs checking.... In 1720 William Stamps was g ranted license to operate a ferry over the Rappa- hannock River. Also in 172 0, William Stamps sold land and Mary Stamps relinquished her dower rights.1 In 1721, Francessco Frizzell, brother to Margaret Frizzell Stamps, deeded 130 acres in the Northern Neck to William Stamps. The Lancaster County Order B ook, Vol. 4, gives the following information on men able to bear arms: Stamp s, 1718, 4 men; 1718, 3 men; 1720, 3 men. In 1731, William obtained a grant for 1533 acres on or near Goose Creek.2 The land was adjacent to 13,879 acre s grant to Col. Charles Burgess, of Lancaster County. In 1731, Charles Burge ss, William Stamps, Thomas Thornton and Rawleigh Chinn, engaged John Barber t o survey the boundary lines.3 Heirs of Chinn and Powell fell out in 1811 ove r their division lines and the accuracy of the 1731 survey and went to court. The law suit, titled Powell vs. Chinn, was heard in Loudoun County Superior Court. Depositions were taken from distant witnesses; one of whom was William Stamps of Bourbon Co., KY <<grandson of Thomas Stamps of Fauquier Co., V A.>> After his wife's death, William Stamps married ca. 1739, Catherine Yerb widow of John Yerby.4 On June 10, 1739, Catherine Yerby Stamps filed an i nventory in the Yerby estate. Her children by John Yerby were: William, Joh n, Elizabeth, Joanna and Sarah (who was then the wife of Nicholas Lawson). K atherine Stamps died prior to April 12, 1745; as Nicholas Lawson, in right of his wife Sarah, took slaves which did belong to Katherine Stamps, his wife's mother. William Stamps died ca. 1745-6. His will, dated March 15, 1745, is lost. It was recorded on May 09, 1746 in Lancaster Co.;, VA. Chattin Chowi ning, executor, filed an inventory in April of 1746.5 An inventory was also filed the same year in Goochland Co.6 A division of the estate was made Dec. 09, 1752 and recorded on Dec. 15, 1752. William appears to have been a memb er of the St. James Northam Parish in Goochland Co; a record there, perhaps a n obituary, states: "Stamps ... This was William Stamps."7 Issue: a. Mary Stamps b.
