At the time of their marriage, William stated he was a bachelor, 20 years old and his occupation was Railway Navvy and states that his current residence as Berralstone Berrferris. William was the son of John Squires who occupation is also listed as Railway Navy. Thirza is an 18 year old spinster from Berralstone, Beerferris who was working as a domestic servant at the time of her marriage. The marriage certificates indicated that Thirza claims her father to be James Beer, a farm labourer. Witness to the marriage were:: Louisa and John HUNT. Note: The registrar says that the original entry reades Thirza Beer and is crossed out with Thirza BERE written in its place.

The birth registration of John Squires (1888) has the mother, Thirza Squires - formerly BERE. In the 1891 Census, William and Thirza Squires are living at Cleaver Field, St Stephens, Lauceston, Cornwall. William is listed as aged 24, a railway labourer with birthplace unknown. Thirza is aged 23 with sons John aged 2 and William age 8 months. The birth certificate for Maria has the following mother's name: Thirza Squires formerly BERE (sic). Family lore says Thirza and William had approximately 15 children wtih 12 suviving to adulthood. Other names of children were reported to be: George, Francis (Frank), Andrew, James, Ray (female) (later told the name of this child may be MAY, which seems more likely, Ivy and Vida (who we have been told twice was the youngest).

Thirza died at Bristol at the age of 66: ref. September Quarter 1936 vol. 6a, page 52. William died at Bristol 23 December 1956, aged 96. He is buried at Portishead, Bristol. His death record can be found in the December Quarter, Bristol, ref. 7b225.
