Came to Canada in April, 1848, settling at Enniskillen, Darlington Twp, Durham County where he rented from his uncle James Gallagher. He worked as a general labourer, clearing land, splitting rails and chopping wood. In the six years while here he saved $600 to buy land. In 1854, together with James Kerr and John Wiggins, he tramped through the bush to what is now Newbridge. All they took was axes, a one and a half inch auger, and cooking utensils.
