26 Apr 1954 - Wm. R. Sakers, Borough Aide, Dies at Age 63 - William Raymond Sakers, secretary of Ridley Park since 1952 and the borough's police chief for 27 years before that, died yesterday in Lewistown Hospital, Lewistown, Pa. He was 63, and lived at 114 Delaware av., Ridley Park. Mr. Sakers' death came a week and a day after he was stricken with a coronary occlusion while on his way to attend the convention of the Pennsylvania Association of Boroughs in State College April 17. He was driving to the convention with his wife, Henrietta, when he suddenly became ill outside of Lewistown. He was taken to the hospital where in addition to the coronary condition,m he developed pneumonia. The former police chief was born in Trainer, Sept. 10, 1890, and was a resident of Ridley Park since the 1920s. He served in the Navy from 1906 to 1914, following which he was employed at Remington Arms Co., Eddystone. Later he conducted his own express business. In 1924 he was asked to reorganize Ridley Park's police department and a year later to serve as its chief, a post he held until he became borough secretary. He was a member of the Delaware County Police Chiefs Association (which he helped organize) and the Pennsylvania Police Chiefs Association. He was also active in the affairs of the Ridley Park Baptist Church and was chairman of the board of deacons there. In addition to his wife, the former Henrietta Miles, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy H. Cavner of Woodlyn, and Mrs. Elaine Stevenson of Sharon Hill, and a son, W. Raymond, Jr., who is in the U.S. Army Air Force. The son, stationed in Reno, Nevada, flew home last week when he learned of his father's illness. Also surviving are five grandchildren, a sister and two brothers. Services will be held Wednesday from the Griffith Chapel, Norwood, at a time which will be announced later. Friends may call at the funeral home tomorrow evening. Burial will be in Lawn Croft cemetery.
