22 Jan 1998 - Writer, artist, community leader Elaine Sakers Stevenson, 77, of Public Landing, Md., formerly of Ridley Park, a writer and an artist, died Jan. 19 at home. Born in Chester, Mrs. Stevenson was the daughter of the late W. Raymond and Henrietta Miles Sakers. She grew up in Ridley Park and was a resident of Oxford, Pa. and New Carrollton, Md. before moving to the area of Snow Hill, Md. Mrs. Stevenson was a community leader in all her hometowns. A member of Whatcoat United Methodist Church in Snow Hill, she was editor of the church monthly publication, "The Spirit", and was active with the choir. Mrs. Stevenson served on the Council of Ministries and was a circle leader for the United Methodist Women. She was also active in the arts with craftwork and painting and helped write and direct several music programs. Mrs. Stevenson wrote an autobiography and was known for her special letters of support. A poet, she was a distinguished member of the International Society of Poets. Mrs. Stevenson is survived by her husband of 56 years, Clifford J. Stevenson; four sons, Clifford John Stevenson Jr. of West Chester, James Harry Stevenson of Bowie, Md., Peter Gordon Stevenson of Easton, and David Lawrence Stevenson of Oxford, Conn.; a brother, W. Raymond Sakers Jr.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Her funeral service will be 2 p.m. today at the Whatcoat United Methodist Church, Snow Hill, Md. Calling hour is at 1 p.m. at the church. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Lawn Croft Cemetery, Lower Chichester.
