William "Bill" Joseph Rutherford, 85, of Stuart, Iowa passed away, September 3, 2008 at the Community Care Center – Stuart.

Bill was born April 1, 1923 in Adair County south of Dexter to the late Edward Francis and Naomi Jean Johnson Rutherford. Bill grew up outside of Stuart and gradated from Stuart High School. Bill enlisted into the United States Navy in 1943 and served during World War II in Africa and the Pacific. He was stationed on a destroyer first (DE259) and then a repair ship (AR19) before being honorably discharged in 1946. On June 30, 1957, Bill was united in marriage to Dorothy May Coleman and they have been married for 51 years. Together they became the proud parents of three children, Robert Lee, Jane Ellen and Dennis James. Bill made a living doing various job throughout his life. He was a farmer and raised cattle for many years. He drove a school bus for the Stuart school district from 1971-1989 and worked at the Stuart Sale Barn for 21 years and at the Winterset Sale Barn for 3 years. After his retirement, he drove the Congregate Meal bus for 21 years as well. He was a member of the American Legion and he and Dorothy belong to the Dexter Presbyterian Church. Bill was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed working with animals. He also enjoyed woodworking and watching sports.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother and one sister.

Bill leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, Dorothy of the home; son, Robert Lee Rutherford, daughter, Jane Stevens, and son Dennis Rutherford; 6 grandchildren, Jacob and Samuel Rutherford, Jennifer Mann, Tim Mann, Hope Hols, and Craig Rutherford, one sister, Helen Eagan of Creston, Iowa and a host of friends all of whom will miss him greatly.
