There is some doubt that this William Rogers is Ruth's father, although the proximity and the matching up of un-named children in 1830 and 1840 census are consistent. I can find no other William Rogers in PCVA when Ruth was born. However, Ruth's death certificate names her Mother as Ruth. Still , she was very old and senile, and Winston , the informant, may have just guessed, or misspoke, or misunderstood. Ruth didn't take to calling herself Ruth until later in life, and was Sarah E (later A.) when she was first living with Joseph. We don't know the name of the older daughter who left the William Rogers household before the 1850 US Census. There was a a daughter Ruth who was too young to be ours, and who married later. Elizabeth Rogers was NOT a second wife replacing an earlier Ruth, either. Her Marriage to William Rogers is documented before Sarah A/E Ruth" Rogers was born. ( Perhaps she had a middle or nickname of Ruth. There were "William and Ruth" couples elsewhere who might have been Ruth's parents. ( Loudoun Cty, Va up the Northen Neck, and a couple in Dade Cty Ga., for instance, but I can't find a connection to Ruth. In 1840 William had in his household one son, presumably, ages 5-9, and six young women: 3 under 5, one 5-9, and two 10-14 years old.
