William Richards was born in Barbados in 1716, fourth of six sons of Warner Richrds. By the early 1730s, Warner had moved his family to a plantain in New Barbados Neck, Bergen County, New Jersey, at the mouth of the hackensack and Passiac Rivers. By the early 1760s, William was a ship owner and merchant operating out of Perth Amboy. By 1765 he had moved to Philadelphia, making a living as a merchant, ship owner, sometime ship's captain, apothecary, and shop Keeper (with his younger brother Burnet). In 1765, William and another Philadelphia merchant, purchased the primary fishery operation in Lambert, the port community of Trenton, New Jersey, with William soon obtaining sole ownership. The fishery gave William a foothold on the riverbank, where he also operated warehouses, a pottery kiln,[2] a cooper's shop, a bakery, and a store, in addition to his other commercial interests in Philadelphia.[1]
