"1. William Richards was settled at Weymouth before 1 Sept. 1640. On that day the General Court appointed Thomas Jenner and Thomas White to settle a difference between William Richards and John Turner. (Massachusetts Bay Colony Records, 1:300.) He first appears at Plymouth and was there taxed 25 Mar. 1633. He soon removed to Scituate and was there residing, 6 Jan. 1636-37. He early had lands granted to him in the westernecke, 25 acres, which had first been given to John Burslem and William Smith (Weymouth Land Grants, 274.) He married, before 1650, Grace Shaw, daughter of Abraham Shaw of Halifax, Eng., and of Dedham. She was baptized at Halifax, Yorkshire, 15 Aug. 1621. (Register, 48: 346.) [Grace's parentage is unproven] She survived her husband. He made his will 18 Jan. 1680, and it was proved 25 July, 1682. In it he mentions his wife Grace, his sons James, who was to have the homestead, William, Joseph, and Benjamin, the youngest.(Suffolk Probate, 6: 388.)"

"Deane tentatively claims this William Richards [who appears in the Plymouth tax lists of 25 March 1633 and 27 March 1634] as a resident of Scituate by 1636, and a landholder there in 1639 [Deane 331]. He further identifies this man as the William Richards of Weymouth in 1640 and later [MBCR 1:300; Savage 3:535]. The only evidence in favor of this position is the identity of names."
