"Dr. Redden Claims Credit for Serum" (headline)

Says Influenze-Pneumonia Cure Is His Own

Claims He, Not Dr. Maguire, Was the inventor

Dr. William R. Redden of Boston claims that it was he, and not Dr Lee W. Maguire of Boston, who invented the human serum cure which helped to reduce the mortality from influenza- pneumonia from 28 percent to 4 percent, during the epidemic of 1918. He said that recent articles in Boston papers, other than the Globe, have attributed the invention of Dr Maguire.

This dispute was brought to light as an aftermath of the Armistice Day Naval awards at Washington. Both doctors received the Naval Cross and a citation. Dr Redden said last night that he in- vented and developed the serum, taken from convalescent influza patients during the Fall of 1918, and as Dr ma- guire was his commanding afficer Dr Redden invited his interest as a matter of courtesy. Dr Redden then showed a newspaper quotation of a remark made by Health Commissioner Woodward in 1918, saying "the influenza epidemic is now under control," and eulogizing "the Redden serum" "In fact," said Dr Redden, "Maguire was my superior offi- cer, but I invented the serum and did the work"
