A story by Cynthia Redden Kenney Phelps was that Ben sang for a Jewishsynagog on Saturdays, and sang at a protestant church on Sundays. He hadstudio in Boston, he taught voice & his wife Alice taught piano. Theylived in Somerville.

A letter from Oliver Redden November 2002:

My father had a vocal studio on Huntington Ave in Boston. His firstsinging job was in the Exetor Theater in Boston. Being a baptist, hisfamily forced him to sing under an assumed name! My father sang operawith the WM during Rosevelt regiene in the old opera house on HuntingtonAve. since destroyed.
He did sing at Temple Ohabei Shalom in Brookline for many years and onmany Jewish Holdays. He also sang in many churches on Sunday -Somerville Baptist & Methodist churches, Lynn Unitarian and WinchesterMethodist finally. He also sang the tenor solo in the Messih at SymphonyHall several times and in many churches. In short he had a good tenorvoice! Je jad occasion to make a record in the early days of recordmaking for Brunswick Records - not too successful!
My mother Alice Oliver, gave piano lessons while living in Somerville. She played the organ and directed the choir at Charlstown Baptist Churchin later years. She accomanied my father in many of his concers over theyears. It made for a good combination.
I just remembered that my father also sang at the Scotch PresbyterianChurch originally located on Tremont St. Boston on Sunday evenings. Thecongregation has now moved to Needham. My mother sang in the choir forseveral years before she died.
