William J. D. Ratcliff, retired president of the George Peabody Co-Operative Bank in Peabody, died Friday in the Greenbriar Terrace Nursing Home in New Hampshire. He was 88 and lived in Gloucester. Born in South Paris, Maine, Mr. Ratcliff had lived in Peabody before moving to Gloucester 18 years ago. He was valedictorian of the class of 1923 of Peabody High School and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1927. Mr. Ratcliff joined the George Peabody Co-Operative Bank in 1934 and retired as its president in 1974. He was president of the Federal Home Loan League, the Massachusetts Co-Operative Bank League and Massachusetts Co-Operative Central Bank. He was active with the Peabody Chamber of Commerce, the Massachusetts Arthritis Foundation, Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the Salvation Army, the American Red Cross and the Peabody Housing Authority. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Peabody and of the Masons. Mr. Ratcliff leaves his wife, Doris (Wardwell); two sons, William N. Ratcliff of Richmond and Wardwell Ratcliff of Gloucester; and eight grandchildren. Services will be private. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, West Peabody. -Boston Globe February 18, 1992
