  • Penticost, William, b. 1763; entered service in 14th Virginia Regiment lost arm at Battle of Waxhaus [sic] & granted disability Pension; moved in 1801 from Dinwiddie Co., VA to Jackson Co., GA; died there 1/27/1839; married 2/26/1829 there [to] Mary Bradley; widow resided there in 1848 abt. age 61; died Troup County, GA, 1/1/1853; soldier granted disability Pension in 1786; children surviving soldier: Celia Wood, Edward W. (referred to in 1848 as widow's stepson & as "Colonel"), Phoebe Steed, Elizabeth Flanagan & Matthew; query letter in 1925 from David J.D. Myers, La Fayette, GA, whose mother was great great granddaughter of soldier, says soldier's grave at Pentecost Church, Jackson Co.     William Pentecost came before me one of the Justices for the County of Jackson in the State of Georgia & made Oath that he is the same William Pentecost to whom the original Certificate formerly in his possession was given, & of which he has been deprived by the bad faith of a
    certain Philip Jackson his former attorney & of which the following is a Copy

    “I do with the advice of the Council hereby certify that William Pentecost aged 24 years,
    late a Private in Bufords detachment, appears to have been disabled in such a manner while in the service of the United States [at the battle of Waxhaws SC, 29 May 1780] as to entitle him to the sum of fifteen pounds a year – which allowance is accordingly made him to commence from the first Day of January 1786. Given under my hand as Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia at Richmond this 22nd Day of February 1787.

    That he served in Bufords [Abraham Buford S46372] detachment at the time he was
    disabled & that he now resides in the State of Georgia & County of Jackson, & has resided there the last 20 years, previous to to which he resided in Dinwiddie County & State of Virginia

    I do hereby certify that I knew William Pentecost as a soldier in the late Revolutionary with Grate Brittian. I know I know he served three years under Colo. Bluford and I think in the forteenth Virginia Redgiment on Continental Establishment. Given under my hand this 21 day of Sept 1810.

    NOTES:
    On 9 July 1853 several acquaintances of William Penticost stated “that one of his arms
    was off at or near the shoulder joint, that they always understood & believed that the loss of his arm was sustained while in battle during his service in the war of the Revolution, or on account of wounds received while in battle.”

    On 17 Jan 1848 Mary Penticost, 61, stated that her late husband, William Penticost, died
    on 27 Jan 1839. On 4 May 1848 her age was given as 60 when she applied for the unpaid
    balance of his pension up to the day of her husband’s death. She declared that she married
    William Penticost in Jackson County on 26 Feb 1829, and Rev. John Pendergrass certified that
    he had performed the marriage ceremony of William Penticost and Mary Bradley. A letter dated
    29 June 1848 refers to Mary Penticost’s stepson, Col. Richard W. Penticost . On 29 June 1853
    James C. St Johns and Elizabeth St Johns stated that Mary Penticost had moved to Troup County GA four years previously and died on 1 Jan 1853 leaving the following children: Richard, Celia, Phebe, Elizabeth, and Matthew.
