He was a member of the Lee-Jackson Camp, Cavalry in Lexington and served in the 2nd Rockbridge Artillery, CSA. He was deaf, 5'11," fair complexion, blue/hazel eyes, dark hair. It appears he was exempted for deafness but signed up anyway and was wounded in action. Per Robert J. Driver Jr.'s book, 14th Virginia Cavalry, 1988, H.E. Howard, Lynchburg, VA, page 164. A very good source.
W L Patterson was in the Liberty Hall Volunteers, Co. I, 4th VA Infantry. He was wounded and captured at Fort Steadman and also wounded at Hatcher’s Run. Oren F Morton’s A History of Rockbridge Co., Virginia, p 425.
