- ↑ in the US Navy, and received his basic training at The Great Lakes NavalTraining Center. Billy was sent to Motor Machinist Mate school inColumbia, Missouri. He was stationed on Midway Island for 11 months andfollowing his return to the states on leave on April 1943, he wasassigned to do duty on the U. S. S. Killien. While on patrol off Leyteon November 1, 1944, she was attracted by seven enemy aircraft. Thedestroyer splashed four raiders before a bomb from one of the attackersfound its mark on Killian's port side, killing 15 men. Billie wasseverly burned by steam escaping from the engine room and was evacuatedto the Hospital ship the U.S.S. Mercy, where he died. Billy was VanWert County's 55th World War II casualty. He was first listed asmissing but was later reported dead, and he was buried on Leyte in theArmy Air Corps Cemetery. At the time he was a Motor Machinist MateSecond Class
