NER 34:71 (Jan.1880) stated William McLean "started in 1794 at New Hartford the 'Whitestown Gazette' which he removed to Utica in 1798. This was the second paper started in the county and the first in Utica,,, ancestor of the present "Utica Morning Herald and Gazette' "
