The McClean Family in Pennsylvania
WILLIAM McCLEAN was a seventh son; born in 1702 on the Isle of Mull, went to Ireland in 1715, married Miss Elizabeth Rule in Donegal, Ireland, February 20, 1733. They came to America after the birth of their fourth son, John, on May 11, 1740, and settled initially in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, afterwards they moved to the Marsh Creek Settlement in York County - now Adams County - near the eastern slope of South Mountain. Since he had six brothers older than himself, some of them no doubt came to America and settled in the same locality as did WILLIAM. The Marsh Creek burying ground contains numerous McCLEANs lying side by side. He was a Justice of Peace in York County 1774-1776. (See History of York County page 432). He died in York County June 13, 1785.
[The account goes on to name William's children as William Jr. (b 1733), Archibald, Moses, John, James, Samuel, Alexander, Elizabeth and Joseph. One researcher claims William also had a son named Daniel (1749-1802).]
