William (Clark) Maxwell, age 23,
served in Company H, 9th Regiment of Indiana Volunteer Infantry from April
20, 1861 to July 30, 1861. The regiment, committed to a three-month duty
tour, was ordered to West Virginia May 29 and attached to Kelly's West
Virginia command until July with action at Philippi on June 3. Additional
action in which the Regiment was engaged: Laurel Hill July 7-8; Bealington
July 10; Carrick's Ford July 12-14; pursuit of Garnett's forces July 14-17.
