- WILL - MATTHEWS, WILLIAM, Charles Co. 30 Nov. 1776. 23 Jan. 1777. To son Joseph Matthews, Ex., all land, 340 acres, Negro boy Clem, stock. To wife Mary Matthews, Extx., use of all land during life, residue of personal estate to wife and children except son Joseph. Wit: G. B. Causin; H., Diggs; Richard Shierburn. Mary Matthews widow of William Matthews stands by will for real estate but; elects her 1/3 part of personal estate. 41. 279

- p 3 - On May 21, 1777, Letters Testamentary were granted on the estate of William Mathews to Mary Matthews, his executrix, Joseph Matthews, executor appointed with her, having first renounced the executorship. Bond, taken with her securities, Raphael Neale and John Holme, is 1500 £ for due administration. Henry Diggs and Gerrard Blackstone Causin, Appraisers. On Aug 5, the inventory, amounting to 712 £ 10 shillings 0 pence, was exhibited.

Includes: Negroes Jack, Ned, Charles, Jack, Grace, Charity, Tom, Sweedy, Hannah, Davy, James, Lucy, Stephen, Bridget, Clem; 10 cattle, 9 horses, 2 ewes and 1 lamb, 34 pigs; 1 desk, 7 old silver teaspoons, a parcel of books. Whole amount: [blank]. We approve the above inventory. Signed - GB Causin, Henry Diggs. Kindred: Jean Matthews, Mary Shirburn. Creditors; William Smith for John Glasford and Company George Hunter. On Aug 5, 1777 came Mary Matthews, acting executrix of William Matthews, late of Charles county, deceased, & made oath that the foregoing is a true inventory.

Debts include: the inventory of the deceased's estate, exhibited into Orphan Court on May 21, 1777, amounting to 712 £ 10 shillings 0 pence; a crop of tobacco left in the house unstripped. The whole amount: 1042 £ 6 shillings 8 pence. Disbursements went to Clare Slye, per bond dated Jan 21, 1775; Glasford and Co. per bond dated Nov 7, 1774; Dr. Joseph Adderton; Belane Posey; William Whitter; Willson Cage; Margret Mathews'; Fredrick Green for the Gazette; Henry Diggs Mary Sherbin; Zeph'a Turner; James Swann; William Hanson, Sheriff, for levies for the year 1776; Edward Boarman for ditto for the year 1777; Walter Hanson, Register, for letters and recording Will and for recording inventory and for stating, passing, and recording this account, Balance to be disposed of according to the deceased's will 516 £ 18 shillings 1/2 pence. Final Account: 1042 £ 6 shillings 8 pence. Securities: Raphel Neale and John Holme of Charles County. Proved on Feb 23, 1779 by Mary Mathews, the accountant above mentioned.
