Came to West New Jersey aboard the Ship "Kent", Captain Gregory Marlo. William Matlack was the first white man to set foot on what is now Burlington. He built the first two houses in Burlington, and the first corn mill. He lived to be 81. He had six sons and three daughters. Birth: 1648, England Death: 1738 William Matlack/Matlock was born in Cropwell Bishop, Nottinghamshire, England. In England the family spelled the name Matlock. After setting in Cherry Hill, William spelled the name Matlack. William was of the Quaker faith. Inscription "Within this inclosure lie the remains of William and Mary Matlack who came to West New Jersey from England, William in 1677 and Mary Hancock in 1681, the first of the name and the ancestors of the family in America. Here also lies the remains of Richard Matlack, a son of William and Mary and part of his children. Also a number of the servants and slaves of the family." |
