William Gamble Mason was born on 14th April 1796 and baptised on 22nd May 1796 in the parish of St George Hanover Square in Westminster, in the western suburbs of London. He was the son of Elizabeth Mason, formerly Gamble, and her husband William Mason, a farmer. He was named after his maternal grandfather, William Gamble, who died between young William's birth and his baptism.

Sadly young William died as a baby when he was seven months old, being buried on 26th November 1796 at Barnack in Northamptonshire, which is where his mother was from.
