Chapter 12 of The History of Butler County - 1883 lists a Private William H. Martin serving in the 78th Infantry Regiment, Company E during the Civil War, enlisting on February 18, 1865. History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-1865 add that he was discharged on 14 June 1865. A second entry says that he deserted on 05 August 1865 (from Ancestry.com American Civil War Soldiers database)

The History of Butler County says of the 78th: "This gallant command, one of the very few Pennsylvania regiments which served with the Western armies during the late war, was recruited in the months of August and September, 1861, and rendezvoused at Camp Orr, near Kittanning. Of its ten [p. 93] original companies, Company H was a Butler County organization, and was recruited and placed in the field under the command of the brave Capt. William S. JACK. A considerable number of the members of Company F were also Butler County men."

A Sergeant William H. Martin is listed as "mustered in service" on Dec. 7, 1861 (the same date as all the officers) and discharged. He served in the 103 Regiment, Company E. However, the Ancesty.com American Civil War Soldiers database lists: William H Martin, enlisted: 07 December 1861, Sergeant, enlisted at age 42. Served Pennsylvania Enlisted E Co. 103rd Inf Reg. Pennsylvania disch disability (Discharged in 1863). This William would be too old.

The baby book of Jane DeChantal Martin Jacobson states that the father of Charles F. Martin was Rufin King Martin.

According to the 1880 and 1900 censuses, William H. Martin's parents were born in Ireland. The 1870 census states that both parents were foreign born. The death certificate of William's son, Charles F, states the William was born in Ireland too, but the census records indicate he was born in Pennsylvania.
