"In 1086 Alstonefield was held of the earl of Shrewsbury by William Malbank, who may have been enfeoffed by the earl of Chester. (fn. 69) He was one of that earl's principal tenants in Cheshire in 1086 and held the barony of Wich Malbank (later Nantwich). He was still living in 1093, but by 1119 he had been succeeded by his son Hugh."
