William came from Kentucky to Marion County by way of New Orleans. In 1740 Samuel and William Lampton came to Virginia from England. Had Samuel remained in England, he would have become the Earl of Durham at his father's death. This William is believed to be the grandson of the English William. Samuel Lampton moved to Missouri and his daughter Mary Jane Lampton married John Marshall Clemens and their son Samuel L. Clemens was born there [edit] Disputed LineagesThere is no evidence in the public spaces for a "Samuel Lampton" in the immediate ancestry of Mary Jane Lampton (mother of Mark Twain/Samuel Clemens). There are however, several William Lamptons, though none of these seem to immediately lead toward the family of the Earls of Durham (which this lineage originally suggested w/o support). |
