William Kidd (said to be b. ca 1737, d. prior to 1820), the Montgomery/Tazewell Co, VA, pioneer, was in fact the father of Deborah Kidd Peery, as proven by the estate papers of William's brother Samuel, who died ca 1820 in Fluvanna Co, VA. In these papers (on file in the Fluvanna Co, VA, court order books), the heirs of William Kidd are named as Deborah (who m. John Peery), Larkin (who m. Elizabeth Jones), Elijah (who m. Matilda Neel), Elias (who m. Margaret Bagley), Isbell(a) (who may have never married), and Frances (who m. George Waggoner). Another son, named in a 1827 power of attorney (original located in the KY Historical Society) filed in connection with the estate settlement, was Sherrod (who m. Polly, whose last name in unknown). The Samuel Kidd estate distribution suggests two additional heirs of William Kidd, but their names have not been documented.
Of these heirs, Elias, Larkin, Sherrod, and Isabella moved to the Wayne Co, KY, and surrounding areas. Elijah, Deborah, and Frances stayed in the Tazewell Co, VA, and surrounding areas.
The name of the wife or wives of William Kidd, the Tazewell Co pioneer, has not been found to date. The name of Margaret Chowning is the name traditionally associated with the wife of this William's grandfather, who also was named William Kidd, and who lived in Middlesex Co, VA. The births of the children of the elder William Kidd and wife Margaret are recorded in the Christ Church Middlesex parish register. One of these children, Aaron, was the father of the William Kidd who was the Tazewell Co pioneer.
That Margaret's last name was Chowning has not been documented to date. While many Kidd researchers accept it as proven, no one has found the original source of this information, nor do the Chowning family researchers have any record of a Margaret marrying a William Kidd.
