William shows up in 4 census records that are not obvious to link together, especially given the number of men named William Jackson.

  • The 1870 census[2] shows him with wife Hannah and daughter Paralee
  • The 1880 census[3] shows him with wife Margaret, daughter Pearlee and 4 additional children
  • The 1900 census[4] shows him with wife Sarahan, 6 children (none of which is in the 1880 census unless you count William Robert matching William C) and 2 step-children
  • The 1910 census[5] shows him with wife Elizabeth and 4 children (none of which is in the 1900 census)

The thing that links them together is the obituary of his daughter Signora Jane (Jackson) Brewer[6]. She was in the 1880 census and the siblings listed in her obituary were in the 1900 and 1910 censuses.

He probably only had 2 wives, since the death record of his daughter Caledonia (born 1889) gives her mother's name as Hannah Mitchell, which matches his wife's first name in the 1870 census. Presumably Margaret (1880 census) was her second name (or an error in the census). Certainly, his wife's name in the 1900 census is incorrect, since he married Elizabeth (Betty) in 1899.
