According to several WorldConnect databases, he was the son of James Ishmael and Mary McFerrin. He and Mary homesteaded in Illinois about 1840. They had 10 children: James Alexander, Elizabeth (m. Robert Thomas), William Thomas; Anna (m. George Clark); Susan (m. John Trumble); Sarah Mahalia (m. James M. Shankland); Samuel Clemens; Margaret J. (m. James Armstrong); Robert Tilton; and Charles Martin.

 His brother Samuel married Mary Ellen's sister Elizabeth Laird Linn.
 
 In the 1850 census for Richmond, Cass Co., Illinois, William Ishmael is 41, farmer from KY; with Mary 31 PA; William 21 KY; Elizabeth 18 KY; Ann 14 KY; Susan 13 KY; Sarah M. 11 IL; Samuel 9 IL; M. J. 7 (f); Robert S. 2; Charles M. 1; and Richard Overton 19.  Next door is James Ishmael 24 with Merinda J. 17.  Brother-in-law William Lynn is next door with family.  In the 1860 census for Richmond, Cass Co., Illinois, William 'Ishmond' is 55, farmer from KY; with Mary 52 PA; Ann 24 KY Susan 22 KY; Sarah 21 IL; Samuel 18; Margaret 16; Robert (14?); Charles M. 10; [grandson? nephew?] Benjamin (Noies?) 4 -- all born IL; and Patrick Keames 23 'farm labor' from Ireland.  [Son?] William 'Ishmond' 27 is on the same page with (Jane?) 17 and James Shankle [Shankland?].
 In the 1870 census for Richmond, Cass Co., Illinois, William Ishmael is 64, farmer born Kentucky with $11,000; Mary is 61 born Pennsylvania; Martin 20 farm hand; Robert 23 farm hand; and Anna 1 -- all born Illinois. {p. 433} Next door is James Shankland with their daughter Sarah, and on the other side are James Ishmael 42 and William Ishmael 39 and their families.
