William Hunter bought in 1767 a tract of land on Mathew Smith's branch which had been deeded to Henry Covington from John and Mary (Airey) Covington. He sold this same tract in Jun 1769 and moved to NC where he bought 150 acres in Anson Co. from Thomas Mason (Richmond Co. Deed Book B., p. 244). On 20 Jan 1789 William Hunter received a grant of 100 acres (Grant No. 182) on the head of the south form of Cartledge Creek. He also had bought, in 1788, two lots, "one on the square", in the town of Rockingham, one of which isnow the site of the Farmer's bank.
