William Hotes and his family can be found in the 1850, 1860, 1870 census. Wiliam is listed as a laborer in the 1860 census. His daughter Matilda, 10, appears both as a servant in the house of Henry Betting, an Allentown shoemaker, and at home in her father's house. If the other children worked outside the home, it is not shown on this census. By 1870, William is listed as a butcher. This indicates that he might have saved enough money to purchase a business. In the 1880 census, however, Catherine Hotes lives with her son-in- law Solomon Bachman and her daughter Ella. In seems likely that William Hotes Sr. has died at this point.
