Civil War years

He appears to have had health problems, as noted in this anecdote published in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle in June 1861S3:

Mr. William Holt, a resident from this city, returned from Richmond, Va., yesterday, after an absence of nearly three months. He went to Virginia for his health about the 1st of April last and put up at a watering place in the mountains somewhere in the neighborhood of Richmond. His uncle, a rabid secessionist, desired him to stay and join the secession army. He at first refused, but eventually found that it was best to dissumulate and so gave out that he would join the army of the rebels. His uncle lives some distance from the mountains and informing him that he would go on to get his baggage, left, and by means of a forged pass deceived the railroad conductor who checked him on to Washington. All males from sixteen years old and upwards are enrolled and will be required to join the army. Strangers are in the same category. They must either enlist or make tracks.

By late 1862, however, William was ready to follow his brothers into the war. A 4 Dec 1862 article describes the Fourth Metropolitan Guard, 173rd Regiment, as being stationed on Riker's Island awaiting orders to proceed to the seat of war. The list of officers includes Wm. H. Holt as Adjutant on the regimental staff. "This regiment has been raised in Brooklyn, almost exclusively, and we believe is officered, altogether, by Brooklyn men, mostly of the Metropolitan Police force. They form part of General Banks' expedition."S4

Baseball

Like his father and brothers, William appears to have been active in the Excelsior Base Ball Club of Brooklyn. A Brooklyn Daily Eagle article of 12 Mar 1864 notes his appointment as assistant secretary of the team (with his older brother Charles as secretary). (The article talks about club officers, but it implies that the officers are also the players on the team.)

Death at age 47

From the Brooklyn Daily EagleS2:

The friends of the Holt family, of Brooklyn, will be grieved to learn of the sudden death of Mr. William Holt, son of the late Charles J. Holt, of this city, the old and highly esteemed member of Dr. Scudder's Church. He died suddenly in Richmond, Va., on Wednesday week, of disease of the heart, while on a visit with his mother at the residence of his uncle James. He was a man of genial and most kindly disposition, and was beloved by all who knew him.
