Friends (Quaker)community, had its beginning in 1750 when William Hoggatt, a Quaker pioneer from Pennsylvania, tied his pony to a sapling about three miles East of Polecat Creek and went down to a spring for a drink of water. A camp of Indians were nearby. He was able to convey to them that he was a Quaker from PA., and was warmly welcomed as one of "Penn's Quaker sons". On the land which he selected, a rude log cabin was built. Other Quaker settlers came into the area, and in 1760 William Hoggatt married Hannah Beals at the home of Richard Beeson. THIS INFORMATION HAS BEEN CHALLENGED by North Carolina records show William arrived in North Carolina in 1753 and was first at Cane Creek monthly meeting.
