2 of the 59 charter members of the United Presbyterian Church in Henderson Co, IL
Settled in Monmouth, IL on May 5, 1835; member of the "Old Settlers' Organization" of Warren and Henderson Counties. He purchased 120 acres of land for $150 in Henderson Co on Dec 12, 1835. (Henderson Co was formed in 1841 from Warren Co.) He was Sheriff for 6 years in Henderson County , beginnning 5 Apr 1841. He purchased about 80 acres for nearly $400 in Henderson Co on Apr 16, 1842.
He was Postmaster of Oquawka for four years, during the administration of President Taylor. Later he became Assessor of Internal Revenue for the 4th Dist. of IL. He was appointed Assessor by Pres. Lincoln and removed by Johnson. Politically, he was an ardent Republican. From 1844-48 he represented Henderson and Warren Counties in the State Legislature . He was a magistrate for 12 years: 4 yrs each in Henderson, Mercer, and Warren Counties. In 1872 he served as Presidential Elector for the 10th Dist of IL. He was in the milling business for 8 yrs in Warren Co, 3 yrs in IA, buying and selling flaxseed. He was living in Red Oak, Montgomery Co, IA, in 1882. He came to KS in 1883, purchased land in Butler Co, then came to Sedgwick Co where he worked as a grain dealer.
