William was born in Norfolk, England circa 1809. He married Marianne (surname unknown) about 1830. His second and third daughters Judith and Harriet were born in 1832 and 1834 respectively. Their baptisms are registered at the Parish of Blofield, near Norwich, Norfolk, on 5 September 1832 (Judith) and 2 February 1834 (Harriet).

William was tried at Norfolk Quarter Sessions on 21 October 1836 on charge of sheep stealing. Found guilty, he was sentenced to transportation for life to New South Wales. He reached Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 9 October 1837.
