William Hawkins' origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is on 24th September 1801, when he married Ruth Nicholls at Little Gaddesden in Hertfordshire. One of the witnesses to their marriage was a James Hawkins, who was presumably a relative.

William and Ruth went on to have a daughter, Maria, who was baptised at Little Gaddesden in 1802. The family has yet to be traced after Maria's baptism.
