Ruth Nicholls was baptised on 15th May 1785 at Studham in Bedfordshire, daughter of Mary Nicholls, formerly Ambrose, and her husband James Nicholls, a labourer. Ruth's baptism does not say where the family lived, but other family events show they lived at Hudnall, a hamlet which belonged to Edlesborough parish, but which was closer to the churches at Little Gaddesden and Studham than it was to the church at Edlesborough.

When Ruth was five years old her mother died.

Ruth married when she was sixteen years old. She was married on 24th September 1801 at Little Gaddesden to a William Hawkins. The following year they had a daughter, Maria, baptised at Little Gaddesden. Ruth, William and Maria have yet to be traced after Maria's baptism.
