Facts and Events
BIRTH: Cook Co., IL records, federal census 1880-1920, tombstone, family knowledge. Several different records list birth years from 1852-56. However, he told granddaughter (Edna Haskin Black Simmons) he was "born on Friday the 13th of August and it was the luckiest day of his life." The only August Friday the 13th was in 1852 which would also make him 21 if married in 1873. The 1900 census record lists his birth month as January 1854. In 1854, January 13 was a Friday! MARRIAGE: Cannot locate record of marriage in Chicago records (1871-1876). Tradition says March 1873, census of 1910 and 1920 say 1875. Celebrated 50th anniversary in 1873 (date from granddaughter Edna) at 1824 W. Congress Street with all but one of their children (William) , many grandchildren and one great-grandchild. DEATH: His death certificate states his parents were born in New York (father) and Massachusetts (mother) which agrees with 1850 IL census. Cause of death on Thanksgiving Day 1931: cardiovascular renal disease. STEPFATHERS: His father, John L. Haskin, died of a gunshot wound when William Lorenzo was no more than 6. Strange that no mention was ever made within the family of stepfather, Webster A. Castle who married mother,Clarissa, one year later, or second stepfather, Hiram Moulton whom she married in 1862. UPDATE: 2000-09-14 Found in 1870 Illinois Census, Ward 5, Joliet, Will County, said to be 16 years old, thus born about 1854. RESIDENCES: (from Chicago City Directories) 1875 - 336 S. Des Plaines along with his brothers Elliot N. Haskin and John Haskin, all printers. 1882 - 99 Sebor Street 1923 - 1824 W. Congress Street 1930 census says married at age 19 (1873) . Living at 2018 W.
