Facts and Events
Per Ashmead's History of Delaware County, William occupied the Harvey homestead during the Battle of Brandywine. The British (Hessian) troops, took him captive and marched him at the front of the column. He survived a skirmish with the American rebels, and was locked in a tavern basement with others when the British reached Dilworthtown. They escaped, and as he was headed home, he spied a pair of laced boots protruding from a hollow log. He had discovered his servant, a colored girl, hiding in the woods.
Even though Friends did not take part in the battles, William was called by the title of Major the rest of his life, due to his active interest in the revolt.
