Married Sarah Paine. His son Nathaniel raised a company of soldiers for the Revolution. As a quaker he was opposed to war, but his wife convinced him he should use his wealth and influence for his country. He raised a small army and set out for Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Legend has it a parrot on the way called to him "Quaker, quaker, fighting quaker," as he still wore the quaker garb. He was captured by the British and later released. When he returned his home had been plundered and his cattle driven off.
