In one of the assaults upon the defences at Petersburg, Va., in July, 1864, as 2d sergeant, he had charge of the colors of the regiment. The charge was repulsed, and being wounded in both legs, he was unable to walk. He dragged himself back to the Union intrenchments, drawing the colors after him with his teeth. He saved to flag, but died of the wounds there received.
