Facts and Events
!Willaim Granberry was born in England about 1625, and died after 1684 in Nansemond Co., VA. His wife's name was Anne, surname unknown. William and his brother John were in VA by 1656 when they received land grants on Simons Creek, Lower Norfolk Co., VA. In 1682, John Granbury received a patent for land in Nansemond Co., VA on the North Carolina border. In 1679 William Granberry received a patent for land in the same county. The Granberry's were Quakers. The two brothers had four sons between them but it has not been determined from available records which sons belong to which brother, except for William, Jr. The other sons were Samuel, John, and Peter. !Other family spellings of this name include Cranbury, Cranbery, and Granby. They are all derived from the Old English form "crana-byrig", meaning an earthwork frequented by cranes. !Source: THE GRANBERRY FAMILY AND ALLIED FAMILIES, by Edgar Francis Waterman published in 1945 in Hartford, CT.
