The following was printed in the Vermont Phoenix, a Brattleboro and area weekly on 27 Jan. 1899: East Jamaica - Death of Capt. Wm. F. Gould. Capt. Wm. F. Gould, who came to visit his daughter, Mrs.(Frances) Jason S. Allen of this place, Jan. 8, died January 19th of grip after an illniss of four and one-half days. He was born on Newfane Hill in 1809, of a family of six children, of whom only one is left, Mrs. Susan Follansbee of Leominster, MA. His father was Nathaniel Gould, more widely known as "Nat, the auger maker". His mother's name was Susan Palmer of Rupert, VT. He married Mary York in Boston, in 1840, who died Nov. 16, 1882 and five children were born to them. George F. Gould of south Royalston, MA; Georgianna, the latters twin sister, who died in infancy; Benjamin F. Gould, who lives on the home farm at Townshend and Minnie A. Smith, who died July 1886. He has always been a hard working, economical man. The funeral was at the Congregational Church at Townshend, Rev. Mr. Hardy officiating. The Townshend Obituary - The late William F. Gould: William F. Gould died from grip Jan. 18, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edson Allen of East Jamaica, where he had gone on a visit of a few days, at the age of 89 years. He was born on the same day and year as Gladstone. He was the son of Nathaniel Gould and was bron on Newfane Hill where his father carried on the Blacksmithing business and also made augers. He attended the academy and graduated from it. At the age twenty, he went to Boston and was a sailor for several years, and at one time serving in the Captain's place, and that is where he obtained the title of Captain that always clung to him. In 1841, after having engaged in the truck business in Boston, he bought his grandfather's farm, known as the Lyman Farm, one and a half miles from Newfane village, where his father settled in 1804 (1806). In 1857, he sold this farm and in 1858 bought a farm on Newfane Hill. In 1871, he bought the home in Townshend about two miles from the village. His children are Frances Hellen Allen of East Jamaica; Benjamin Gould of Hartford, CT.; Georgew Gould of Phillipston, MA; Minnie Smith died in 1886. His wife died Nov. 16, 1882. His son, Benjamin, came last April and cared for his father to the time of his death. References
