William was born illegitimately while Alice was working at a farm in Gaswater, near Lugar in Ayrshire. The name of the father was never revealed. Alice later moved to Carnwath and married John Thomas Brown in 1900. There was a considerable age difference between (John) Thomas Brown and Alice Gibson when they married of about 10 years making John Thomas only 9 years older than his step-son William. As a result, William continued to live with his grandparents even after Alice and Thomas' marriage. The fact however that William called one of his sons Thomas Brown Gibson supports the idea that their was some kind of relationship between them.

William worked as a coalminer and lived at 6 Slate Row, Stobhill, Ayrshire, Scotland.
